Helping to preserve the Albuquerque Fire Department History!

Our ongoing efforts to catalog photographs and stories are helping to preserve the Albuquerque Fire Department’s distinguished history. If you have a story or photograph that you would like to share with the association, contact Historian.

Below is an article produced by AFR Dr. David Rettinger in a series of articles celebrating Women’s History Month

As we continue to celebrate Women’s History Month, it’s important to remember those who have broken glass ceilings like Albuquerque Fire Department firefighter Joanna Sieben! Joanna was one of two women to successfully pass the difficult agility tests for firefighters in 1978. Joanna joined AFD in January of 1979 and was recognized as the department’s first woman firefighter. Joanna was also recognized as AFD’s first female Assistant Chief of the Training Academy! Thanks to AFD Retirees Association Kerry Horton and Herman Bishop for providing the original Abq Journal
